2 February 1950

University of Indonesia was founded

VIVAnews - 59 years ago today, on 2 February 1950, the Indonesian government founded the Universitaet Indonesia, which later changed its name to Universitas Indonesia (University of Indonesia).

University of Indonesia (UI) has a long history. On 19 August 1945, two days after its proclaimed of independence, the Indonesian government founded the Higher Education Board of the Republic of Indonesia (BPTRI) in Jakarta.

BPRTI had three faculties: a Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy, a Faculty of Letters and a Faculty of Law. When the Dutch army reoccupied Jakarta in late 1945, the BPTRI was moved to Klaten, Solo, Yogyakarta, Surabaya, and Malang. At the same time, the Dutch government founded the Nood Universiteit (Emergency University) in Jakarta in 1946. A year later, the Dutch changed the university's name to Universitaet van Indonesia (UVI).

On 2 February 1950, a month after the Dutch acknowledged Indonesia's independence, the government founded Universitaet Indonesia (UI), which was a merger between the BPTRI and UVI.

During the 1950s, UI consisted of 10 faculties: Medicine, Law and Letters in Jakarta, Agronomy and Veterinary Medicine in Bogor, Engineering and Mathematics & Natural Sciences in Bandung, Medicine and Dentistry in Surabaya, and Economics in Makassar.

From 1954 to 1964, the university underwent several reorganizations, in which its campus branches in parts of Jakarta, Bandung, Bogor, Surabaya and Makassar were established as separate universities, i.e. Jakarta Education and Teaching College, Bandung Institute of Technology, Bogor Agricultural University, Airlangga University and Hasanuddin University.

Thus, from 1965 until the late 1980s, UI only has three campuses, all in Jakarta, i.e. the Salemba Campus (Medicine, Dentistry, Economics, Engineering, Science and the Graduate School), the Rawamangun Campus (Letters, Law, Social Sciences and Psychology), and the Pegangsaan Campus (Public Health and parts of Medicine).

In 1987, the government constructed a new campus for UI in Depok, West Java. After the construction was completed in early 1990s, all of its faculties were relocated to this new campus. However, the university decided to maintain its Salemba Campus which until today still hosts the Faculty of Medicine, inter-disciplinary Graduate Programs, and other offices.
